Our epic odyssey departs Argentina’s lively capital Buenos Aires for the fashionable Uruguayan resort town of Punta del Este, before a relaxing day at sea brings us back to Argentina, this time to wildlife-rich Puerto Madryn on the coast of northern Patagonia. After another sea day, we reach Port Stanley, the colorful jewel of the Falkland Islands, then Ushuaia at the southernmost tip of South America, often dubbed the “End of the World”. Entering the wilds of Chile, we cruise Cape Horn to reach windswept Punta Arenas. Two days cruising the glacier-carved Chilean Fjords bring us to the icy waters of Laguna San Rafael, followed by Puerto Chacabuco, where the Andes meet the ocean. Then we visit Castro, famous for its wooden stilt houses that line the waterfront, followed by Puerto Montt, to shop for handcrafted souvenirs at Angelmó Market. A final day at sea brings us to vibrant Valparaíso, where you have an overnight to explore its UNESCO-listed historic quarter and visit a former residence of renowned Chilean poet Pablo Neruda.

Laguna San Rafael, Chile

mar 03, 2029

9:00 AM - 6:00 PM

“Hiss, rumble, crack” is the soundtrack to intrepid excursions around this coastal lake in one of Chile's largest national parks. These are the sounds of glaciers “sighing”, a natural occurrence for these moving ice sheets – here it's the 30,000-year-old San Valentín glacier, where Zodiacs get up-close views of its 60-meter face. While humans are rendered awe-struck by such a sight, the seals lounging on icebergs nearby take no notice. These fjords, the geology of which Charles Darwin once observed on his Beagle voyage, are also home to sea lions and sea leopards. Perhaps he, too, ended the day with a Scotch chilled with chunks of ice from that millennia-old glacier.

Wild wonders abound. Southwest, Laguna San Rafael is a UNESCO-listed, forest-fringed coastal lake crowned by an ice-blue glacial arc. Further east, explore thundering waterfalls in Río Simpson National Reserve, with its pristine canyon rivers draw fly fishermen from far and wide, seeking prized rainbow trout. Inland, you'll find the provincial capital, Coyhaique, and Puerto Aisén, a city straddling the Aisén River, both with plentiful artisan shops, markets and cosmopolitan dining.

Built by Jesuit missionaries in the 17th and 18th centuries the churches are perfect examples of the intagible richness of the Chiloé archipelago. However, if your interests gravitate more towards something more modern, pay a visit to Castro's Museum of Modern Art Chiloé, which hosts and impressive display of permanent and temporaty exhibitions. Nature lovers are not left wanting either: from its dense, moody forests, windswept hills to its rich spiritual culture, Chiloé offers up a unique South American experience.
