Nestled in Greece&#39;s scenic Peloponnese region, is the tranquil seaside town of Nafplion, where you can explore a rich tapestry of neoclassical architecture, ancient ruins, and crystal-clear waters of the Argolic Gulf. This small town at the top of the Argolic Gulf is considered one of the most beautiful and romantic towns in Greece and was the nation&#39;s first capital. Its charming old town will leave you in awe thanks to its traditional architecture, three castles and restaurants where you can enjoy traditional Greek cuisine.

Nafplion is one of Greece&rsquo;s prettiest towns. The narrow streets of the old town are filled with elegant Venetian houses and gracious neoclassical mansions. The setting is dominated by the towering Palamidi Fortress. Setting out on foot directly from the pier, marvel at the beautiful buildings lining the port, before proceeding to the Kapodistriou Square and Park, dedicated to the memory of the first Governor of Greece. In the park with his beloved Palamidi in the background, is also the statue of Koloktronis, known as the Grand Old Man of the Morea, as he was the leader of the Greeks during the War of Independence. It was he who besieged the Turkish occupied Palamidi citadel for 15 months before it was finally surrendered back. Across the way you see the current Town Hall building, which was originally the very first High School of Greece. Continuing through the backstreets not normally frequented by visitors, you come upon the old Catholic Church and the 1702 Church of Agios Spyridon. You will reach the popular Constitution Square where the Archaeology Museum is located.&nbsp; It is housed in two floors of a Venetian mansion and exhibits findings of Neolithic, Classical, Hellinistic, and Roman periods. After your visit in the museum, you can either stay in town for independent exploration or walk with your guide back to the pier and your ship.

Explore the neoclassical buildings, parks, and churches of Nafplio on foot, as well as visit the Archaeology Museum of Nafplion.

Hidden Gems of Nafplion Town

Take a one-hour drive from the port of Nafplion to discover one of the most powerful cities of antiquity, ancient Corinth.&nbsp; Join your guide on a walking tour to see iconic landmarks such as the monolithic Doric columns of the Temple of Apollo, the 15,000-seat ancient theater, and the imposing Acrocorinth, a hilltop fortress that had protected the city from antiquity to the 19th century. Afterward, reboard your motor coach for a short drive to the famous Corinth Canal. Plans to build a canal through the Isthmus of Corinth predate the Romans, but the four-mile-long waterway carved through steep limestone was not completed until the late 19th century. After a short stop for photos, you will visit the Markellos Olive oil facility. Learn all the secrets that go into producing olive oil and, of course, get a chance to taste extra virgin olive oil through an interactive seminar. Finally, enjoy a tasty traditional Greek lunch in a local restaurant before you one-hour return drive to port where your ship awaits.

Ancient Corinth & Olive Farm

Start with a one-hour drive from the port to Nemea. Nemea is a land of legends and traditions. It was the homeland of the Nemean Lion, slayed by the legendary Hercules. The Nemean lion was a vicious monster that lived in a cave on mount Triton. Hercules trapped the beast and then killed it with his club. The archaeological site is located in the foothills of the mountains of Arcadia, 333 meters above sea level. The strategic location of Nemea and its climate were the reason that the Panhellenic Games of Nemean were held in the region. The first Nemean Games was held in the year 573 BC; Olympia, Delphi, and Isthmia of Corinth also arranged games during this time period. The original temple that stood here is gone, but a new temple was erected in honor of Zeus around 330 BC, and a part of the Doric colonnade of this temple dominates the site today. You can glimpse the remains of an older stadium close to the temple, but around 320 BC, Nemea got a new stadium, about 400 meters from the temple. Some pillars at the entrance show the location of the locker room. Here, sportsmen removed their clothes and oiled their bodies, taking part in the games completely naked. They entered the stadium through a 36-meter long tunnel. The tunnel is still in good condition, and one of the earliest examples of vaulted structures in Greece. Looking at the walls, you will find some of the participants&#39; names written there, carved while they were waiting to enter the stadium - think of it as ancient graffiti. The museum contains a collection of pictures of Nemea by travelers from the 18th and 20th centuries, coins of ancient visitors to Nemea, items related to the athletic activity on the site, prehistoric finds (pottery, tools, weapons etc.) from sites in the district of Nemea, pottery and jewelry from the Mycenaean cemetery at Aidonia and the settlement of Aghia Eirene, architectural remnants from monuments at Nemea and other sites, and a collection of inscriptions from Nemea, Phlius, and Petri. As the Nemean Valley is also famous for its wine, you will get to visit a local winery for a tasting of the unique Greek Agiorgitiko wine from grapes that are grown here, infusing the wine with a velvety feel and rich taste. Cheese will accompany the tasting.&nbsp; End with the drive back to the ship.

Nemea features ancient ruins, including a stadium and bathhouse, along with a museum displaying ancient artifacts. After visiting the archaeological site, enjoy a wine tasting at a local vineyard.

Ancient Nemea & Winery

Explore the ancient city of Mycenae, home of the mythological conqueror of Troy, King Agamemnon. The history of Bronze Age Greece is shrouded in myth, none grander than that of the Trojan War. In his epic poems The Iliad and The Odyssey, Homer described how a coalition of Greek city-states led by King Agamemnon destroyed the fabled city. Embark on a scenic 45-minute drive through a landscape of citrus groves and ancient sites until you reach Mycenae. Located on a hilltop dominating the surrounding plains, Mycenae reached its peak around 1350 BC, during a period of Greek history named after the city. Enter the citadel through the iconic Lion Gate. Admire the city walls, so impressive that ancient Greeks believed them to have been built by mythical one-eyed giants called Cyclops. See the beehive tomb, thought to belong to King Agamemnon himself, as well as the palace complex and other royal tombs. Conclude this informative experience with a visit to the Archaeological Museum of Mycenae, with its display of artifacts collected from the site. Take the 45-minutes drive back to the ship.

Ancient Mycenae

Depart the port for a short sightseeing drive through the city of Nafplion to Palamidi Fortress, where the view of the sea and the city of Nafplion from the fortress&rsquo; walls is breathtaking. The castle, which is in impeccable condition, was built by the Turks and Venetians and, until recently, was used as a prison. Wander through the grounds of the fortress and don&rsquo;t miss the photo opportunities from the top of the fortress. Continuing on and passing orange, lemon, and olive groves, you will arrive via a twisting road to Epidaurus. You will be amazed at the colors and beauty of Epidaurus, located on the cool slopes of a gorgeous, wooded valley. The founders of this site believed in the hidden virtues of plants and water and dedicated the area to Asclepius, the God of healing. It is said that Asclepius restored health to the sick and sometimes gave life to those that were dead. This sanctuary was once a flourishing spa with temples and therapeutic baths. Today, only the foundations are left of the buildings, with the exception of the world-famous Theatre of Epidaurus. Built in the 4th century BC, it boasts incredible acoustics with seating for 12,000 spectators. Following your visit to this fascinating site you will board your motor coach for the drive back to the port and your ship.

Take an approx. 40-minute scenic drive through the city of Nafplion and into the countryside, passing orange and lemon groves en route to Mycenae. Mycenae was one of the most powerful cities in ancient times. The site was excavated by the German archaeologist Schliemann in 1876. It was his life&rsquo;s obsession to discover the grave of King Agamemnon to connect mythology with fact. Schliemann&rsquo;s diligent work resulted in the unearthing of Europe&rsquo;s oldest sculpture, the famous Lions Gate. Excavations also uncovered the palace complex, shaft graves, and many gold treasures, as well as some of the world&rsquo;s greatest archaeological finds, including the Mask of Agamemnon, which are on display in the Athens Archaeological Museum. The ancient cities of Tiryns and Argos are observed from your motor coach before you arrive at the historical site. As you explore the fascinating ruins and excavations, discover renowned Beehive Tomb, thought to be the tomb of Agamemnon. The massive walls of Mycenae will amaze you. In certain areas, they measure eight feet in depth and are said to have been built by the Cyclops. Then, rejoin your motor coach and, after a short drive, you will reach the restaurant where you will enjoy a traditional Greek lunch. After lunch, reboard your motor coach for a panoramic drive through olive and citrus groves along a winding road. Arrive at Epidaurus, set in a beautiful, wooded valley. In the Italian seaside city of Bari, you will find picturesque streets, curious shops and incredible cuisine, including a wide selection of delectable wines. Get lost in the maze-like streets of its old town to admire enchanting monuments and sample its homemade dishes, including delicious fresh pasta at Via dell&#39;Arco Basso.

This excursion takes you from Apulia to the region of Basilicata, where the town of Matera is found. Matera is renowned for its landscape, with the old town lying along the sides of a deep ravine split into two by a very small hill known as Civita, where the medieval town has been built. Sassi were partly built and partly carved out of the soft ravine limestone: houses and grottoes, or churches and grottoes at the same time, where life in the past was really hard and the economy was based upon pasture, being agriculture quite impossible in a stone context! Sassi were considered one of Southern Italy&#39;s examples of poverty, but they have been transformed into its most important cultural heritage nowadays, and has been listed among the UNESCO sites. Setting off by foot from the pier, follow your guide on an informative walk, enjoying an orientation of Old Town before embarking on the hike along the old, fortified walls of Kotor, taking you up the rugged mountainside to reach St. John&rsquo;s Fortress, the highest point of the ramparts above Kotor. Along the way, your guide will point out historical sites and offer insights into Kotor&rsquo;s centuries-old past. The ancient city walls are distinct in some places and appear to be part of the rocky mountainside in others, a picturesque combination of hand-hewn fortification and natural landscape. Admire the city&rsquo;s medieval ramparts, gates and churches, encountering ever-more amazing views as you make your way higher and higher above town. The climb is strenuous and steep, with a rough, cobblestone path running alongside a track of more than 1,300 natural stone steps But the stunning views are well worth the effort. Reaching the top, look out over the red rooftops of old Kotor and shimmering waters of the bay below. It starts about 260 feet above sea level and ends approximately 670 feet above sea level. Departing at Pile Square, take a guided walk in the Old City of Dubrovnik and enjoy some free time before the special treat at the Slanica Fortress, the main venue of the Dubrovnik Symphony Orchestra. Here, enjoy a 45-minute Classical quartet concert consisting of pieces composed by Croatian and international composers. After the concert, drive back to your ship.

Enjoy a guided walk of Durbovnik followed by a Classic Quartet Sorkocevic performance, in the old town of Dubrovnik.

Cultural Evening in Dubrovnik

After boarding your motorboat, enjoy refreshments of local wine and fruit as you begin your cruise to the island of Lokrum. Now a nature preserve, Lokrum is known for its array of exotic plants and gardens. After approximately one hour on Lokrum, re-board your motorboat for the pleasant cruise to nearby Lopud Island. On arrival, you will see a quaint town with a population of barely 300. During your stay on Lopud, you will enjoy a delicious lunch of local specialties. After your leisurely day of exploring the islands around Dubrovnik, re-board your motorboat, enjoy another glass of wine, and sail back to your ship.

Island Cruise

Leaving the pier, your air-conditioned motor coach will take you the short distance to the Dubrovnik City Walls. Climbing the stairway at Ploce Gate, you will soon reach the city walls where you will first visit the Maritime Museum. This will be followed by a guided walking tour along the entire length of the city walls, offering breathtaking views of Minceta Fortress, St. John&rsquo;s Fortress, Bokar Fortress and the Maritime Museum. Delight also in the panorama of terra cotta roofs and charming Dubrovnik homes. During your visits to the Walls, refreshments will be served in a local caf&eacute;. Reaching Ploce Gate once again, descend from the Walls and make your way to the Rupe Museum. Its unique collection of archaeological relics provides an interesting picture of Dalmatia&rsquo;s historical development. After some free time in the old city, return to your ship at leisure.

City Walls Walk with Maritime & Rupe Museums

Leaving the pier, your air-conditioned motor coach makes the short journey to Pile Square. As the old city center is pedestrianized, you will then continue on foot from Pile Square. &nbsp;&nbsp; Pile Gate, approached by a beautiful bridge, is one of the two main entry points to the walled city, and is guarded by a statue of St Blaise. Our guide will then lead you along Stradun, the main street of Dubrovnik . During your walk, visit a 14th-century Franciscan Monastery, the Sponza Palace and the Dominican church and monastery. Next is a visit to fascinating Dubrovnik Cathedral built between 1673 - 1713 but actually built over the remains of other cathedrals dating back to the 7th century. Today, it contains an interesting collection of gold and silverware and priceless works of art. After the tour, enjoy one hour of free time to explore the Old City at your own pace. Re-board your motor coach and return to the ship.

Exploring the Walled City of Dubrovnik on Foot

Depending on the ship position, walk or take a short transfer to the lower station of the Dubrovnik Cable Car. Built in 1969, the cable car was used by visitors and locals alike for a chance to take in beautiful views of the city and surrounding area. When war came in 1991, the cable car was destroyed and remained in disrepair until its recent restoration.&nbsp; Arriving at the top of Srdj hill, disembark the cable car and enjoy a short orientation before proceeding to the nearby war museum, where you will learn about the 1990s invasion of Croatia by the Serbs and Montenegrins. After a pleasant stroll and refreshments enhanced by majestic views, rejoin your motor coach and travel to the Ploce Gate, the eastern entrance to the Old City, to begin your walking city exploration. View the Dominican church, the 15th-century Rectors Palace, the Church of St. Blaise, and the Cathedral, which is built on the remains of the old Cathedral that was destroyed in the earthquake of 1667.
