Wonderful Copenhagen

<p>The cultural and governmental capital of Denmark, Copenhagen, is also one of the most charming and fascinating cities in Northern Europe. It is believed to have been the site of human settlements dating back to the Stone Age, and the city itself is thought to have gotten its start as a fishing village in the 10<sup>th</sup> century.</p><br><p>The magnificent Christiansborg Palace is the seat of the Danish parliament, home to the Royal Reception Rooms, houses the Supreme Court of Denmark and several governmental offices &ndash; the only place in the world with all three supreme powers of state under one roof. The palace itself sits on a small island in the heart of Copenhagen, Slotsholmen, and we will make the most of it is as we tour, what many Danes refers to as &ldquo;The Island of Power&rdquo;.</p><br><p>We start off with a visit to the King`s Royal Reception Rooms. The Great Hall offers magnificent settings for state dinners hosted by the King, and in this very hall, take a glimpse of the tapestries telling more than 1,00 years of Danish and international history. As you walk through the palace, Kings and Queens from yesteryear are gazing down on you. No visit to Christiansborg Palace would be complete without seeing the throne room. On the balcony of this room, overlooking Copenhagen, Queen Margrethe II was proclaimed regent of the Danish Realm in 1972, followed by King Frederik X in January 2024. Christiansborg Palace is the third of the Christiansborg&rsquo;s to occupy this prominent location, and before that, it was the location of Copenhagen Castle. The remains of the two other Christiansborg&rsquo;s are still visible on the surface with the stables standing from the first and the Royal Chapel to be the reminder of the second.</p><br><p>After touring the shining halls, we will go underground, to see the remains of the very first castle &ndash; or rather fortress &ndash; dating back more than 800 years. Experience the ruins from the castle of Bishop Absalon from 1167. Become acquainted with the story of the place as a medieval fortification, royal residence and seat of absolute power. Learn of the fascinating human fates that are entangled in the ruins.</p><br><p>Crossing the court yard, we&rsquo;ll be making our way towards the Royal Stables. Here the horses of the Royal Household have been living since 1740. The stable complex and the two wing buildings are the remains of Christian VI&rsquo;s pompous Baroque palace. When His Majesty the King holds New Year levees and other banquets at Christiansborg Palace, the beautiful white horses are hitched to the Golden State Coach in splendid gala harness, getting ready to convey their regal passenger. The coach is from 1840 and coated with 24-carat gold leaf. Most of the royal coaches are on display at the stables today, however the horses are during the summer kept at a secret location.</p><br><p>Walk to the Library Garden, crossing the courtyard of parliament. Here Danes often sees ministers and member of parliament as they enter or leave the palace &ndash; often on bike. Here we will dive a bit into the Danish democracy. The Library Garden is an oasis in the middle of the busy city. Now a charming garden, but it was once a part of the harbour, welcoming ships from the colonies. Today, we still see the hooks on the wall, where ships were moored.</p><br><p>Our visit to the &ldquo;Island of Power&rdquo; will be seasoned with a visit to the mighty tower in the middle of the complex. 108 meters tall, this is the highest tower in the inner part of Copenhagen. Here we will indulge the Danish open faced-sandwiches lunch before making our way back to the pier.&nbsp;</p><br><p></p>

Island of Power

<p>Drag&oslash;r, once a Dutch settlement on the edge of Amager Island, today a charming village with cobble stoned streets, bright yellow houses and a vibrant atmosphere. The old part of the village consists of 17<sup>th</sup> century houses, lining the narrow and winding cobblestone streets and alleys. Standing on the marina, you might notice a more contemporary landmark; the Oresund Bridge, connecting Denmark and Sweden. The bridge, at the time of construction was the largest suspension bridge in the world. Drag&oslash;r was known by the outside world already in medieval times. It was an international market place for the Hanseatic merchants who came here every year to purchase herrings with which the Sound of &Oslash;resund was abounded. Over the next 200 years Drag&oslash;r developed into a prosperous shipping town.</p><br><p>The town boasts of many very well-preserved historical buildings due to the extensive preservation efforts and local legislation, making the town mostly pedestrian in the 1930s. The old part of the town is a cosy, picturesque maze of alleys with yellow painted houses and cobble stoned streets lined with hollyhocks in the springtime. Enjoy a guided stroll through the narrow streets and enjoy vistas of &Oslash;resund between Denmark and Sweden &ndash; and indulge in a Danish lunch at a local venue.</p><br><p>From the charming village, the tour will take you on a sojourn towards Orestad district. In the early 2000s this area was no more than a vast marsh landscape &ndash; today highly acclaimed buildings of steel and glass has risen, given this area a more modernistic look by architects, such as Bjarke Ingels. A photo stop and introductory walk to the area will be conducted here where contrasts meet. Modernistic, and somewhat futuristic buildings on one site, and just across a small stream, oxen and geese are foraging.</p><br>&nbsp;

<p>Spend some time getting to know Copenhagen and Denmark a little better, as you travel from the charming fishing village of Drag&oslash;r to the futuristic district of &Oslash;restaden.</p><br>&nbsp;

Past & Present 

<p>Venture out on the Danish countryside and enjoy vistas of Sweden from the coastal road. In Hiller&oslash;d, explore the massive fairy-tale castle of Frederiksborg Castle, an astonishing example of Dutch Renaissance architecture. Built in the 17<sup>th</sup> century, Frederiksborg houses the Museum of National History. See historic portraits and paintings, and visit the chapel, home of the oldest working organ in the world, the 1610 Compenius Organ. The church is also the Order Chapel of the highest Danish order &ndash; here you can explore Coat of Arms of all receivers of this order, including Nelson Mandela and Charles de Gaulle.</p><br><p>Enjoy a photo stop at the Queen&rsquo;s favored palace, the Fredensborg Palace. This is the Majesty&rsquo;s summer residence, built in baroque style. Often used to host state visits and larger family occasions in the Royal Family.</p><br><p>Continue the tour to the local inn for a traditional Danish lunch.</p><br><p>Next, pay a visit to one of Denmarks UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Kronborg Castle. Enjoy sweeping views across the Sound from the ramparts and learn of the castle&rsquo;s link to Shakespeare and Hamlet. Enjoy a guided visit to the Chapel, courtyard and imposing banquet hall before returning to your coach for a leisurely return drive to Copenhagen.</p><br>&nbsp;

<p>Enjoy three royal castles north of Copenhagen and indulge in a Danish lunch at a local inn be the seaside.</p>

North Sealand Castles

<p>Historic Copenhagen is partially built on islands and crisscrossed by many waterways and canals, allowing easy access by sea to many Copenhagen sights, offering a relaxed and scenic way of discovering the city &ndash; a particular atmospheric way to experience this is to join a canal cruise.</p><br><p>The canal cruise will take you around the expansive Copenhagen harbour and into the picturesque canals of Christianshavn and Frederiksholm with historic buildings and landmarks. Notice the golden spiral tower of the Church of Our Savior.</p><br><p>You&rsquo;ll embark the canal cruise next to the most cherished landmark of the Little Marmaid statue and en route see many of the city&rsquo;s famed landmarks, such as the Christiansborg Palace, the Old Stock Exchange, the Royal Palace of Amalienborg and the Opera House across. Your local guide will narrate the sailing, telling stories of the city and the landmarks you are passing by.</p><br><p></p>

Embark the canal cruise next to the most cherished landmark of the Little Marmaid statue, and en route see many of the city&rsquo;s famed landmarks, such as the Christiansborg Palace, the Old Stock Exchange, the Royal Palace of Amalienborg and the Opera House across.&nbsp;

Copenhagen Canal Jaunt 

<p>The area around Roskilde was once walked by Viking warriors and traders. Travel to the Viking Ship Museum in this ancient town to see the thousand-year-old remains of the five Viking Longboats excavated from the bottom of Roskilde Fjord.</p><br><p>Outside, you&rsquo;ll find the Museum Island, an archaeology workshop and, during the summer, a working Viking boatyard where master craftsmen make replicas of Viking-age wooden boats and Longboats, using the very same techniques as their Viking ancestors.</p><br><p>A short drive will bring us to the mighty Roskilde Cathedral &ndash; a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Scandinavia&rsquo;s earliest brick Gothic cathedral. With tall spires, the magnificent church is one of Denmark&rsquo;s most important architectural monuments. Today&rsquo;s cathedral dates from the 12th century, but many of its architectural details, such as porches and side chapels, were added in subsequent centuries. Danish monarchs are buried in Roskilde Cathedral, with very few exceptions, all in ornate tombs. It is believed that Harald Bluetooth &ndash; a mighty Viking King &ndash; is buried here too. Keep an eye out for the richly decorated bronze statues, huge frescoes and paintings, and wooden choir stalls carved with reliefs and scenes from Creation to Last Judgment &ndash; all of these bears testament to the importance of this cathedral, overlooking Roskilde Fjord where the Vikings once sailed.</p><br><p>After our exploration here, we will journey back to the pier in Copenhagen.</p><br>&nbsp;

<p>After stepping abord your motor coach you&rsquo;ll travel through Denmark&rsquo;s capital city en route to Tivoli Gardens. The gardens are one of the world&#39;s oldest amusement parks. Known for its beautiful parade of flowers, restaurants, caf&eacute;s, and a concert hall, it&rsquo;s also famous for two spectacular rides. The wooden roller coaster that was built in 1914 is not only the world&rsquo;s oldest, but it&rsquo;s still in operation! Plus, the Star Flyer ride is the world&rsquo;s highest carousel, standing over 262 feet high!<br /><br /><span>Established in 1843, Tivoli Gardens has evolved into a cherished national gem and a global draw. Serving as a delightful playground for individuals of all ages, Tivoli captivates with its enchanting atmosphere, inspiring both Hans Christian Andersen and Walt Disney. The magic lies in Tivoli Gardens&#39; inclusive appeal, offering something special for every visitor amidst stunning landscapes featuring exotic architecture, historic edifices, and vibrant gardens.</span><br /><br />Your guide will lead you through the garden on an introduction walk before winding up at the amazing, and highly acclaimed, Nimb Bar for a refreshment. You are now free to explore the gardens at leisure, just like Walt Disney did in 1951. Take a walk around Tivoli Lake &ndash; once&nbsp; a part of the defense system of Copenhagen &ndash; or hop on one of the many fun and exhilarating rides.</p><br><p>After rejoining with your guide, enjoy vistas Nyhavn Waterfront, home to 500-year old gabled houses and the Stock Exchange, once the center of Copenhagen&rsquo;s finance and trade; at over 370 years old. Next to the Stock Exchange we see the Holmens Church, built in 1563, and site of the royal wedding in 1967 of Queen Margrethe and Prince Henrik, parents to the current King of Denmark. Before returning to the pier, enjoy a photo stop at the Little Mermaid. No visit would be complete here without seeing the famous symbol of the city. Completed in 1913, the famous statue was erected to express gratitude to Hans Christian Andersen and his world-known fairytales. &nbsp;</p>

Enjoy a visit to Tivoli Gardens, one of the world&#39;s oldest amusement parks, <span>captivating individuals of all ages with its enchanting atmosphere. Stop at the acclaimed Nimb Bar for a refreshment before enjoying some free time in the gardens, and end with a sightseeing drive through the city highlights.</span>

At just 17 miles from Amsterdam, many visitors to Ijmuiden opt to go straight to the capital. But, while the bright lights of the big city might be the biggest attraction, Ijmuiden provides easy access to many of the country’s highlights. The vast beaches of Ijmuiden Strand are just 2 miles away and easily reachable by foot, while Haarlem, the Netherlands’ finest example of cafés, canals, cobbled streets and cosy bars is only 30-minutes by train.

<p>Haarlem is the capital of the province of North Holland and the second biggest city in the province after Amsterdam. In Early Modern Times Haarlem became an important scene for industrial (textile) and artistic (painters) development. Nowadays it is a dynamic city with charming streets, a vibrant shopping area and beautiful churches.</p><br><p>During your guided city walk in Haarlem you&#39;ll pass beautiful crow-stepped gable houses with idyllic gardens. Along the way your guide will explain the history of Haarlem and the Netherlands. During the guided walk, the charm of the houses will be reinforced by the small canals running through the city.</p><br><p>The highlights of this city walk are the market square with the town hall and a visit inside the St. Bavo Church. This Gothic church with a tower of 75 meters is UNESCO World Heritage and displays magnificent stained glass windows. Furthermore, it is home to one of the world&#39;s largest organs. Many famous musicians have played on the organ (Mozart, H&auml;ndel, Mendelssohn). <br /><br />After this visit guests can enjoy some free time in the center of Haarlem before boarding the coach back to IJmuiden.</p>

Discover Haarlem

<p>Discover the Green Heart of Holland, a typical Dutch nature area with windmills, cows, cheese, farms and traditional crafts. Enjoy its vast nature reserves and its leisure lakes during your boat trip on the Kagerplassen. This is a vast lake area in the Green Heart, which is characterized by shallow lakes and polder islands. The islands are still drained by 18 working and restored polder mills.</p><br><p>See first-hand how the windmills have been working for centuries with explanation by the miller. The Lisserpoelmolen was built in 1676 and is the world&rsquo;s oldest working windmill with a screw pump. For a total of 313 years, until 1989, this windmill was responsible for draining the polder. Initially, it was supported by a couple of other mills. In 1989, an electric pumping station took over.</p><br><p>Enjoy the scenic ride back to the coach on the second part of the canal cruise.</p>

<p>Take a beautiful boat trip on the Kagerplassen: a vast lake area in The Green Heart of Holland.&nbsp;Visit the oldest working windmill with a screw pump.</p>

<p>Boarding your coach at the pier, you&#39;ll leave the port behind and enjoy a drive through the beautiful countryside to the authentic Dutch village of Broek in Waterland. This utterly charming village is well known for its classic wooden houses and farms. After a leisurely stroll through this fairy-like community, you&#39;ll re-join your coach and proceed to Beemster Polder, the oldest area of reclaimed land in the Netherlands. In 1999, this well-preserved and historic area was registered on UNESCO&#39;s World Heritage Site list.</p><br><p>The highlight of your time here will surely be the visit to an original 17th century windmill. There, you will learn how the Dutch have managed to successfully live below sea level. A scenic drive through the lowlands will bring you back to the ship.</p><br>&nbsp;

<p>Visit the countryside with authentic Dutch villages, explore the authentic Dutch village of Broek in Waterland, and enter&nbsp;an original 17<sup>th</sup> century windmill.</p><br>&nbsp;

The First Reclaimed Land

<p>Boarding your coach at the pier. Your narrated drive will then take you through The Hague, the third largest city in the Netherlands. While The Hague is the seat of government for the country, it is not the capital. Along with being the home of King Willem-Alexander, it is also recognized as the judicial capital of the United Nations. <br /><br />During your narrated panoramic tour, you will pass the Houses of Parliament, the Peace Palace, which houses the International Court of Justice, as well as several royal palaces.</p><br><p>Your tour then continues to the Mauritshuis Museum, which was originally a palace of Prince Johan Maurits. In the 19th century, the palace was turned into a museum and the collection today consists of masterpieces from the Dutch Golden Age, including paintings by Vermeer, Rembrandt, Steen and Frans Hals. The works on permanent display here provide a magnificent panorama of Dutch and Flemish art from the 15th to 17th century; ranging from Flemish primitives to sunlit landscapes, from biblical characters to meticulous still lives, and from calm interiors to humorous genre scenes.&nbsp;</p><br><p>Following an unforgettable visit to the Museum, you will then be afforded approximately 1 hour of free time in The Hague to browse and explore the nearby shops before it&#39;s time to re-board your coach and return to the ship.</p>

Take in the sights of The Hague, the official seat of the Dutch Government and then visit the Mauritshuis Museum which houses a world-famous collection of Dutch masterpieces from the 17th century.

Located near the shores of the Dornoch Firth, the distillery has been producing single malt whisky for centuries. Departing quayside Kirkwall, we enjoy a panoramic drive through the pastoral landscape of Orkney&rsquo;s West Mainland to the Bay of Skail for dramatic views of the rugged coastline and the pounding, rolling waves of the Atlantic Ocean. View the Hole o&rsquo;Rowe -a natural worn hole in the headland that the sea explodes through on a wild and windy day. In the distance view the magnificent sandstone Cliffs of Yesnaby.<br /><br />Continuing to the Heart of Neolithic Orkney, designated a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1999, we visit the great ceremonial stone circle known as Ring of Brodgar. Set on the Ness of Brodgar, a strip of land between the Lochs of Harray and Stenness, this astonishing monument is the third largest stone circle in the British Isles. Only 27 stones now remain of what is believed to have been a perfect circle of more than 60 stones when it was formed approximately 4,500 years ago.&nbsp;<br /><br />Finally, we pass the imposing Standing Stones of Stenness, one of the earliest stone circles in Britain dating back 5,000 years, en route back to our ship in Kirkwall.&nbsp;

Turn into Bridge Street and Albert Street, the quaint and ancient thoroughfares now home to Kirkwall&rsquo;s bustling main shopping streets. Once on Broad Street, you will pass Mercat Cross dating from 1962 where public proclamations were once made and it was also used as a pillory.</div><br><div class='ewa-rteLine'>Standing alongside the Mercat Cross is the majestic St. Magnus Cathedral, founded in 1137 and dominating the skyline for many miles. It is one of the finest and best preserved medieval cathedrals in Scotland. The Cathedral took more than three centuries to complete, with the present building representing the styles of all three building eras: Romanesque, Transitional and Gothic.</div><br><div class='ewa-rteLine'>Following the Cathedral visit, you will proceed to walk the short distance to the ruins of Earl&rsquo;s Palace, built in 1600 by Earl Patrick Stewart. Much of the ground floor of the Palace remains intact, and although the upper floors are roofless, their grandeur can still be appreciated. At the heart of the building is the great hall, whose huge stone window frames are beautifully corbelled out from the ground floor walls. The Palace is probably the finest example of French Renaissance architecture in Scotland. The older Bishop&rsquo;s Palace dates back to the mid-12th century and provides incredible views of the Cathedral. From the pier, pass impressive St. Magnus Cathedral and head south towards the former naval base at Scapa Flow, where you will hear dramatic wartime stories about the key role this stretch of water played in World War I and World War II.&nbsp;<br /><br />Leaving the Mainland, travel via the Churchill Barriers, a series of four causeways built during the Second World War to protect the naval base from enemy submarines. Today, the berm-like barriers serve as roadways connecting the islands. You will stop at the third barrier to take a few pictures.&nbsp;<br /><br />Arriving on the island of Lamb Holm, visit the beautifully hand-painted Italian Chapel. <div class='ewa-rteLine'>Encounter Orkney&#39;s mysterious past at two of the finest Neolithic sites in Northern Europe. Built circa 2800 B.C., Maeshowe Tomb is a chambered, stone burial cairn some 115 feet in diameter. The nearby Ring of Brodgar is a circular henge of standing stones at Ness Brodgar.</div><br><div class='ewa-rteLine'>Departing quayside Kirkwall, we take a panoramic drive along the shores of the North Sea to the pastoral landscape in the Heart of Neolithic Orkney, a designated UNESCO World Heritage site, where we visit the great ceremonial stone circle known as Ring of Brodgar.</div><br><div class='ewa-rteLine'>On the way back to Kirkwall, pass the imposing Standing Stones of Stenness, one of the earliest stone circles in Britain.</div>

 <br><div>Departing Kirkwall, head west towards the RSPB (Royal Society for the Protection of Birds) Brodgar Reserve, parking at the Standing Stones of Stenness situated between the Lochs of Stenness and Harray, both Sites of Special Scientific Interest.</div><br><div>Loch of Stenness with its Brackish water is often a place to watch seals and otters near the Brodgar Bridge, whilst the Loch of Harray, being the largest Loch of Mainland Orkney, has three species of nationally scarce pondweed, a very rare caddis fly and you might even spot the Theodoxus fluviatilis, the only known site in Scotland for this small snail, which would commonly be found in English rivers. This location is a beautiful place to spot various wildfowl and waders; you may spot curlews, drumming snipe, lapwings and oystercatchers here.</div><br><div>On your drive to Marwick Head we will pass by the 4,500 year old ceremonial Ring of Brodgar, an ancient stone circle and World Heritage monument, but also watch the skies for birds of prey soaring above, look out for short-eared owls and hen harriers which are so often spotted in this beautiful wilderness.</div><br><div>Continuing to the west coast, we arrive at Marwick Head&rsquo;s RSPB nature reserve. Following a 0.6 miles (1km) walk to a cliff-top observation point, you will arrive at &ldquo;Seabird City&rdquo;. Here, you are afforded incredible Atlantic sea views, as well as have the chance to spot guillemots, kittiwakes, fulmars, razorbills, and puffins dwelling on the soaring cliffs.</div><br><div>Finally, return to your ship in Kirkwall, passing by the Loons and Loch of Banks, a wide expanse of marsh with areas of water and plentiful cover for breeding visiting wildfowl, one of only a few places where you may spot the rare Pintail.</div><br>t

On arrival at the narrow neck of land between the Harray and Stennes lochs, stop at the Ring of Brodgar, a splendid remnant of the Stone Age. Here, you will see 27 of the original 60 stones set in a precise circle, six degrees apart. The stones date from about 2700 BC and are believed to be part of some sort of lunar observatory.</div><br><div class='ewa-rteLine'>Next, re-board your motor coach and travel further north to Skara Brae, one of the best-preserved Stone Age settlements in Western Europe. Exposed in 1850 by fierce storms that swept across the bay, the site reveals how life was lived some 5,000 years ago. Scientific dating places occupation of this cluster of homes from 3180 BC to 2500 BC, a time before Stonehenge and the Great Pyramids. Skara Brae&rsquo;s preservation is so complete, due largely to having been buried for millennia, that it is often called the &ldquo;Scottish Pompeii.&rdquo;</div><br><div class='ewa-rteLine'>Walk amid the stone dwellings, connected by low, covered passages and each with a similar layout, featuring a large square room, central fireplace and fitted stone furniture, including two beds and a shelved &ldquo;dresser,&rdquo; likely used to display prized objects. A replica construction offers an even more complete look at the interior of a Neolithic home, while an informative visitor center hosts artifacts unearthed during excavations conducted during the 1970s.</div><br><div class='ewa-rteLine'>From Skara Brae you will walk to Skaill House, a manor built around 1620 for Bishop George Graham, who was unaware of the treasure of Skara Brae that lay underground just a short distance away. Surrounding the manse are wild and somewhat barren lands, without trees yet still beautiful with a carpet of wild grasses rising to meet a moody sky.</div><br><div class='ewa-rteLine'>Enjoy a survey of the manse&rsquo;s varied architecture representing four centuries, with enlargements and improvements augmenting the home&rsquo;s noble, stone construction. Fascinating relics on display include a chest from a Spanish galleon sunk in 1588 and china from Captain Cook&rsquo;s ship, Resolution.</div><br><div class='ewa-rteLine'>Following your walk through this rambling country house, make the scenic transfer back to your ship.</div>
