Our eight-night holiday cruise from South to North America begins in the lively Colombian city of Cartagena. We start with a relaxing day at sea before hopping between the ABC islands. First, we visit Oranjestad in Aruba, where there’s nature to embrace in the Arikok National Park. Then it’s on to Willemstad, in Curaçao, to explore the kaleidoscopic world around its coral reef, and Kralendijk, in Bonaire, a good spot to discover more about these islands’ Dutch colonial past. A day at sea offers time to practice your golf swing, try out pickleball, or relax in the sumptuous spa, before we arrive in Pointe-à-Pitre in Guadeloupe, learning about Creole life at the town’s museum. There’s time to explore the French-speaking side of St. Martin at Marigot, with its gingerbread-style houses, before we dock in pretty San Juan, Puerto Rico’s pastel-colored capital.

The `B` of Netherlands Antilles' ABC islands (with Aruba and Curaçao), Bonaire is the easternmost of the three. A small island – but at 112 square miles the middle-sized of the ABCs – and generally flat, it features some of the best beaches in the Antilles, huge wildlife reserve areas and year-round sunshine. The charming beachside town of Kralendijk fits snugly into the leeward curve of the island. This capital of Bonaire features the ABC islands' signature pastel-colored buildings and old Dutch homes, reminders of the `home country.` Sights include a colorful boat harbor and fish market, historical Fort Orange, the Old Fort museum, jewelry and duty-free shops, plus a pretty main square shaded by mimosa trees and surrounded by brightly colored flowers.

The capital of Puerto Rico is a proud place that makes a strong impression even on approach. Sail into harbor and spot the sights: El Morro, a 16th-century citadel which once defended the island from attack; Castillo San Cristobal, a fearsome fortress built to scare away invaders; and La Fortaleza, impressive home of the Governor. Once ashore, step back in time along cobblestone streets and through squares flanked by beautiful pastel-colored Spanish colonial buildings. Find a shady perch in one of the cafés, bars or restaurants to watch the world go by with a piña colada – invented here in the 1950s. There are good sands to relax on, too, such asIsla Verde Beach.
