We jump straight into vacation mode with our first port of call, Nassau, the glamorous, sun-soaked capital of the Bahamas. Next enjoy a day at sea, making the most of all that the ship has to offer, as we sail to the lush rainforests of the Samana, Dominican Republic, the cobblestone streets of San Juan, Puerto Rico, and the white sands of Jost Van Dyke, British Virgin Islands. Relax on board as we spend another day gliding across the Caribbean Sea, bound for Oranjestad, Aruba, the Dutch island’s bustling and brightly colored harbor city. Next comes historic Cartagena, where we overnight, leaving plenty of time to stroll the colorful streets and admire the astonishing 16th-century architecture. Now we hop from Curaçao to Bonaire and get a second look at Aruba. Known as the ABC islands, they all deliver Dutch colonial history, kaleidoscopic coral, and incredible nature. Santa Marta, on the Colombian coast, is next before we relax at sea for a day, bound for the exciting experience of cruising the Panama Canal, one of the great man-made wonders of the world. We arrive at Puerto Caldera on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica, and then cross to Nicaragua, where you can watch the surfing at San Juan del Sur. Try the coffee from one of El Salvador’s famous plantations at Acajutla, before we enjoy another sea day. We cross the border to Mexico for the palm-fringed beaches of Zihuatanejo, where dolphins and sea turtles play in the waves, and Manzanillo, famed for marlin fishing. Laidback Puerto Vallarta comes next, followed by a couple of days on board as we cross yet another border to the U.S. and our final destination, San Diego.

One of the quieter spots on this island, the Samana Peninsula allows easy access to coves and bays straight out of a picture book. Playa Payita, known to the locals as The Little Lagoon, offers aquamarine water to dip into and the shade of bamboo and banana leaf umbrellas to retreat beneath. Playa Fronton, with its coconut palms and backdrop of black rock, is the perfect place to snorkel amid schools of parrotfish, nemos, and sunfish. But the big draw is the humpback whales that visit in winter – there's even a museum dedicated to the awesome creatures. Sail into harbor and spot the sights: El Morro, a 16th-century citadel which once defended the island from attack; Castillo San Cristobal, a fearsome fortress built to scare away invaders; and La Fortaleza, impressive home of the Governor. Once ashore, step back in time along cobblestone streets and through squares flanked by beautiful pastel-colored Spanish colonial buildings. Find a shady perch in one of the cafés, bars or restaurants to watch the world go by with a piña colada – invented here in the 1950s. There are good sands to relax on, too, such asIsla Verde Beach. Browsing the art galleries on Calle del Cristo, watching the street performers on Paseo de la Princesa, birdwatching in El Yunque, the only tropical forest in US territory.

Located on Mexico's Pacific coast, Manzanillo is a small city that derives its name from the manzanilla trees that thrived, laden with poisonous tangerine-colored fruit, beside its original wharves. Searching for Chinese treasure in the Pacific during 1522, Hernán Cortés and his minions dropped anchor in the Bay of Salagua, which is located just north of Manzanillo, while looking for safe harbors and good shipbuilding sites. Shortly thereafter navigator Alvaro de Saavedra discovered the Bay of Manzanillo and christened it Santiago de la Buena, or Santiago's Bay of Good Hope. It became a principal departure point for important expeditions and twice sheltered Cortes' galleons from marauding Portuguese pirates. Over the next 300 years, the Pacific Coast's history is filled with accounts of pirates from Portugal, England, France and even Spain assaulting, looting and burning ships for their rich cargos. In recent times, the harbor has been modernized and deepened to allow access to all major shipping lines from around the world.
