The attraction of the second largest city of this country lies in its workday atmosphere, and the city that we see today dates mainly from the 18th Century when trade was booming, and the merchants financed fine houses for themselves and fine buildings for their city that you will have the chance to see during this excursion. View the imposing Tower of Clerigos, the viewpoint, and control of the city, a Baroque 18th-century construction, as well as the cathedral, a 12th-century Romanesque building that served as a church and fortress. Drive along the riverside to see architectural mixtures displaying the old and new housing plus the social status division. As we occasionally stop for cultural visits, you will be surprised by the atmosphere in the Ribeira district, which is full of life. Along this tour, you will: Visit to the Church of Saint Francis. Visit the Bolsa Palace, where you will have a chance to admire the garden in front that features a statue of Prince Henry pointing down to the ocean side. Explore the difference between the old part of town on the riverside and the 18th-century baroque area. See the Clerigos Tower, measuring 76 meters. This impressive construction dates back to 1763, when an architect of Italian origin tried very hard to cut the sheer aspect of a watch tower. Visit Lello Bookstore, the most visited monument in Oporto. The inside is spectacular with its puzzling staircase; the steps are painted red, with a decorated handrail and stained-glass ceiling. Visit the church of Carmo with its side wall covered in tiles from 1908, adding beauty to this open square. Continue to Aliados Avenue, where the tower rises to 70 meters with a carillon clock in its center, rivaling the Clerigos Tower. Pass by the building that took part in the modern transformation of Oporto. The train and the S&atilde;o Bento station are known for the 20,000 hand-painted tiles, as an expression of the local art. Cross the Infante bridge to Vila Nova de Gaia and stop for a scenic view of Oporto. Both D. Luis and D. Maria Bridges can be seen here. Stop at the old monastery for a photo op, now the military headquarters of Pilar. There you will see the traditional boats that used to transport the port wine barrels, the big rooftops for the wine cellars, the bishop&rsquo;s palace from the XVIII century, the lively colors of the Ribeira houses, and finally, at a distance to the left, the Arr&aacute;bida bridge.

Fascinating Architecture of Oporto

Discover the green fields of Minho province as we drive to Guimar&atilde;es along the highway of the north. Guimaraes is the city where the independence of Portugal was proclaimed in 1143 and therefore it is known as the cradle of the Nation. Upon arrival, enjoy an approximate 25-minute photo stop in the park filled with ruins of the medieval Castle, the little Romanesque style church of our first kings, and the Palace of the Dukes of Bragan&ccedil;a. The program then continues with a walking tour through the old city. This is a town to be appreciated on foot, with its very narrow old streets, picturesque medieval houses, and elegant 18th century fa&ccedil;ades. One of the most charming squares is the 'Nossa Senhora da Oliveira' with its cafes and terraces surrounding the 10TH century Church dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The walking tour ends at the &ldquo;Torre da Alfandega&rdquo; old tower in a lovely avenue bordered with gardens, shops of arts and crafts, and local cafes. There will be some free time to enjoy the area before returning by coach directly to your Crystal ship.

Drive south of Oporto to the city of Aveiro. &nbsp; Situated on the inland side of a saltwater lagoon, the city of Aveiro is unique in Portugal because it is threaded with canals that connect the lagoon with the Atlantic Ocean. Consequently, Aveiro is known as the Portuguese Venice. &nbsp; Because of its location, Aveiro has always been a busy port and it became very important in the 16th century when ships set sail from here&nbsp; that used to go as far as Newfoundland and Greenland to catch Cod fish (salted cod is still highly valued by the Portuguese). Today, this charming town is also one of the most prosperous in northern Portugal with plenty of private industries, an important university, and highly developed for tourism.&nbsp; On this tour, we take you on a cruise along the canals on board a typical boat called a &ldquo;moliceiro;&rdquo; it looks like a gondola painted with naive motifs.&nbsp; 'Ovos Moles&rdquo; pastry and sparkling wine will be served on board.&nbsp; Afterwards, the guide will lead the group on a walking tour around the city center. Aveiro is known for its architecture and guests will see several lovely facades decorated in art nouveau style.&nbsp; Before joining the bus to return to Oporto, there will still be some leisure time for shopping or simply to relax in one of the many outdoor terraces.&nbsp; &nbsp;

A visit to Aveiro, known as Portugal&rsquo;s Venice, would not be complete without a boat ride in the canals from where you will be able to see the typical houses and old factories. Well, there is good news and bad news. Let&#39;s start with the bad news: Oporto has some steep hills. Here&#39;s the good news: Our bikes are electric, surprisingly easy to ride, and eco-friendly. Go up and down Oporto&#39;s narrow streets without breaking a sweat. &nbsp; We have hand-picked the very best highlights of this gorgeous city for you to visit including Cordoaria Garden, Cl&eacute;rigos Tower, Gomes Teixeira Square, Lello Bookstore, C&acirc;ndido dos Reis and Galerias, Aliados Avenue, S&atilde;o Bento Train Station, Oporto Cathedral, Bridge D. Quinta da Aveleda is a beautiful private estate where a unique and still relatively unknown Portuguese wine is produced, called &ldquo;Vinho Verde,&rdquo; which literally means green wine.&nbsp; You will love the well-kept gardens and park, the charm of the owner&rsquo;s manor house, the fountain with the representation of the family, and the view of the vineyards. It all comes together during this guided visit that ends with a wine tasting.&nbsp; &ldquo;Vinho Verde&rdquo; is made at the demarcated region starting south of Oporto and continues eastwards all the way to the Spanish border. It is a light, semi-sparkling wine, which is bottled after production and not left to mature, like other wines, in casks of oak. Therefore, it is a wine to be consumed within a year of the harvest. Scenic drive to Penafiel (the town where Aveleda is located) while you discover the lovely countryside of northern Portugal.&nbsp; The large entrance gate of Aveleda is surrounded by magnificent century-old trees and, as you enter the estate, you will discover the beautiful gardens and vineyards. In this area, the vines are draped on trees or on specially built trellises to keep them clear of the ground. This technique serves a double purpose: first, to free the land beneath for cultivation and, second, to protect the vine against damp and parasitic rot.&nbsp; After touring the gardens, you will visit the bottling factory to see the wine-making process, followed by the highlight of the tour &ndash; a wine tasting.&nbsp; Drive back to Oporto and your awaiting ship. Please note: This tour involves approximately 45 minutes of walking over uneven ground and there are some steps to negotiate. Unfortunately, it is not wheelchair accessible.

Quinta da Aveleda – The Green Wine Estate & its Gardens

This harbor town located in the northwest Spanish province of A Coruña, Galicia, is considered one of the gateways – known as the English Way – to Santiago de Compostela and the historic city. However, Ferrol has a lot to offer in its own right, from extensive white beaches to diverse cultural events and distinct tourist routes.

Begin with a scenic, half-hour drive along the coast to Pontedeume via motor coach. Quaint and historic, Pontedeume unfolds over a hill that rises from the river. The town boasts a seafront promenade, an attractive port, and elegant multi-arched bridges spanning the river.&nbsp; Pontedeume&rsquo;s picturesque charm does not end with its waterside locale. The village is replete with wonderful examples of medieval architecture, with houses bearing coats of arms. Narrow streets and alleys, many of them pedestrianized, wind invitingly up the hill. Pontedeume is home to several historical churches, some with impressive fa&ccedil;ades reminiscent of structures found in Rome. Following a guided look at the town and a chance to explore the cobbled streets, travel to nearby Pazo de Mari&ntilde;&aacute;n, a large, 18th-century country house with French-style gardens. Stop to stroll around the gardens and see the eucalyptus, walnut, and banana trees, as well as the chapel built in the 15th century. Be sure to take a moment to appreciate spectacular views over the sea and gardens from the inviting terrace. After your garden walk, rejoin your motor coach and head to Betanzos. One of the best-preserved villages in Galicia, Betanzos features a beautiful Old Quarter. Strolling through the quiet, atmospheric town, you can&rsquo;t help but feel transported back in time, when Betanzos was the capital of the Galician region, serving as the seat of the king&rsquo;s court. Encounter highlights such as the 16th-century clock tower and the town walls, which still retain three of their original four gates. Other treasures include the beautiful churches of Santa Maria do Azougue and of San Francisco. The latter is recognized as the finest Galician example of the mendicant Gothic style. The tomb of its sponsor, Fernan P&eacute;rez de Andrade, is supported by two animals that symbolize his lineage: the wild boar and the bear. Featuring an asymmetrical fa&ccedil;ade and gorgeous rose window, the Church of Santa Maria is no less impressive. Visits to these two churches will be possible if no mass or other event occurs. All too soon, it will be time to depart Betanzos and return to the pier with a transfer of fewer than 30 minutes.

Situated on a small island in the bay of A Coru&ntilde;a, it is only accessible by a wooden footbridge.&nbsp; Passing the &nbsp;La Coru&ntilde;a harbor and waterfront, the drive continues through several quaint villages before reaching Mount San Pedro. This is one of the best viewpoints of A Coru&ntilde;a, with its impressive views of the ocean and the cannons that used to defend the city. Your drive is complete, it&#39;s time to return to your ship.

Depart from the pier by motor coach for the approximate 80-minute drive to Lavacolla.&nbsp; Leaving the coach, walk the last 5&frac12;-miles of the Camino de Santiago to the Cathedral in the footsteps of many others before you since medieval times.&nbsp; Embark on a picturesque stroll through a rural and wooded landscape leading to Monte do Gozo, also known as Happiness Hill, owing to the joy pilgrims feel as they first catch sight of Santiago Cathedral&#39;s towers. Take this opportunity to visit the Cathedral yourself, wander through the well-preserved streets of the Old Quarter, and enjoy light refreshments at the Dos Reis Catolicos Hotel. &nbsp;

Follow the Pilgrims&#39; Path: Camino de Santiago Walk

Santiago de Compostela is a beautiful medieval town, so begin the visit with a scenic drive to see the city&#39;s highlights.&nbsp; Leaving the coach, take a 15-minute walk to the city center&#39;s famous cathedral at 'Plaza del Obradoiro' in all its splendor. The name of this square is said to come from 'Obra de Oro' (a work of gold), and it really does shine! Admire the great Romanesque architecture of the cathedral and surrounding buildings. On one side lies the well-known 'Parador Hostal dos Reis Catolicos,' a former hospital and now a luxurious hotel; the Rajoy Palace is directly opposite the cathedral. Inside the cathedral is a silver urn containing the ashes of St. James, the Apostle of Santiago, kept in a small crypt under the ornate high altar, which is dominated by the carved image of the Patron Saint of Spain. Admire also the ancient door, 'Portico de la Gloria,' of the cathedral, perhaps the finest creation of the 12th-century European Sculptor - Maestro Mateo.&nbsp; Enjoy a walking tour through the Old Town of Santiago de Compostela, lunch at a local restaurant, and some free time for independent discovery before returning to the ship.

Today, the city is renowned for its vital exuberance, as modern architects erect new buildings next to 19th-century structures.

Begin your outing with an approximately 30-minute transfer via air-conditioned motor coach to the famed Guggenheim Museum. Pause to view the museum&#39;s exterior, a unique, titanium-clad structure. Among the many treasures it houses inside is a permanent collection of works by prominent artists of the late 20th century, representing trends in pop art, minimalism, and abstract expressionism. The tour starts towards Hanging Bridge, &nbsp;a World Heritage site. The Channel Islands' blend of cultural diversity, historical significance, natural beauty, and autonomy make them one of the most coveted archipelagos on travelers’ wish lists. The 19  islands (seven of which are inhabited) possess a distinct identity, they have their own governments, legal systems, and even currency and are known for their olde world charm, stunning landscapes with beautiful beaches, lush countryside, and historical sites. St Peter Port, the largest town on the second largest islands Guernsey, sits around 40 miles off the French coast of Normandy – in the Gulf of St Malo – and the influence of past French culture can still be felt on the island. It’s like stepping back in time: St. Peter Port's heart lies in its picturesque harbor, where colorful houses cascade down the hillside, creating a postcard-worthy scene and the bustling harbor is dotted with sailboats and fishing vessels, giving it an authentic maritime ambiance. The town boasts a rich history evident in its architecture. St. Peter Port Castle, dating back to the 13th century, and Castle Cornet, a historic fortress, stand as reminders of the island's past. Depart by coach and drive along the harbor seafront past the 12th-century church and up the winding hill of Les Val des Terres. You will arrive at Sausmarez Manor, where Lord Peter de Sausmarez, will welcome you to his ancestral home.&nbsp; The Seigneurship of de Sausmarez has been vested in his family for nearly 1,000 years. The house, parts of which date back to the 13th century, has been altered by the various occupants throughout the centuries with many changes in Tudor, Queen Anne, Regency and Victorian times. The impressive front fa&ccedil;ade is a fine example of Queen Anne colonial architecture, built between 1714 - 1718 at the bequest of Sir Edward Andros, the first Governor of New York.&nbsp; During your guided tour, you will see a wealth of fascinating artifacts, including a historical log of a voyage that culminated in the capture of the world&rsquo;s largest treasure ship in the 16th century by Admiral Philip de Sausmarez, who&rsquo;s ancestor, Admiral James de Sausmarez fought alongside Admiral Horatio Nelson during the Battle of the Nile.&nbsp; After your introduction to the manor, surrounding woodland, and manicured gardens, return to your vehicle for the short journey back to your ship.

Experience a time capsule of Guernsey&rsquo;s changing fortunes throughout time as you visit Sausmarez Manor, a centuries-old manor house with an intriguing history of naval supremacy and privateering.

Sausmarez Manor

Departing the pier by foot, your knowledgeable guide will regale you with fascinating tales of how passengers, porters and privateers made their way from the busy port, up into the steep lanes and passageways which linked the quay with the town. Smuggling, legalized piracy and, of course, the wine trade are the subjects of your guide&rsquo;s commentary as you make your way along the seafront towards the majestic medieval Castle Cornet. Entering the castle, built in the 13th century, you will begin to understand what life was like for those living in this imposing fortress. You will re-live the medieval myths, murders and manifestations which took place in this captivating fortress. During your visit, enjoy a taste of local fruit bread, gache (pronounced 'gosh'), as well as coffee. Subject to sailing time, you may then care to remain at Castle Cornet to independently explore the excellent museums, or you may return on foot towards the center of St. Peter Port and your ship.

On today&#39;s walking excursion, you are invited to learn of an acient era, when St. Peter Port Harbor was alive with the sights and sounds of trade.

St. Peter Port Walk & Castle Coronet

From the pier, you will walk with your guide along the harbor, pass the statue of Prince Albert and venture into the main Church Square at the center of town. Here, you will have the opportunity to view the classic architecture of the 12th-century church of St. Peter Port. Next, a short walk up High Street takes you past the restored fa&ccedil;ade of a Tudor building and an 18th-century granite arch that leads into Lefebvre Street, home to the Parish Officials&rsquo; offices. Situated on the opposite side of the street is the birthplace of Major-General Sir Isaac Brock. Brock is best remembered as a brilliant leader and strategist during the War of 1812. Continuing up Smith Street, you will reach the gates of Candie Gardens. These beautiful gardens are home to a variety of ancient trees, such as the gingko, which was planted in 1900 and remains the oldest example of its type in Europe. The gardens also contain formal flower borders, ponds with aquatic plants and bog gardens. In the lower garden, two glasshouses dating from 1792 are still in use today. A huge bronze statue of Queen Victoria dating from 1900 stands within the courtyard. After your enjoyable journey, make your way back to the tender pier.

Town Walk with Visit to Candie Gardens

Bring the written word to life by visiting the sights and scenes in the daily lives of the characters in the well-loved Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society international best selling book. Driving along the seafront, with views of Castle Cornet and Havelet Bay, your coach will continue up the Val des Terres and proceed to the Jerbourg area&nbsp; of La Bouvee on the south east cliff top where many scenes from the book are set. &nbsp;Your specialist guide will bring to life the daily turmoil and danger in which the characters conducted their lives. You will see the area where Elizabeth, Lord Tobias,&nbsp; Isola Pribby and Dawsey Adams &ldquo;lived&rdquo;. The landscape is still there, the rutted lanes, the foggy meadows and the farmhouses where the characters held their literary meetings. You can enjoy taking a short walk to see where Elizabeth met her German lover Christian, and see the views from the top of the cliff where Elizabeth and John watched the German bombers flying over&nbsp; on their way to drop their bombs on London. At the same time your local expert guide will inspire you with real life stories of heroism, triumph over adversity and sheer determination shown by the Guernsey people during the long years of Occupation. Re-boarding your coach, you will drive to the little church, which Dawsey took Juliet to see. The little church was built by Brother Deodat and is now known as the smallest consecrated church in the world. In order to impress his Bishop, Brother Deodat decided to cover the church with all manner of shells and broken pieces of pottery. Juliet was delighted to be able to go right inside this beautiful little church. Your coach will now drive down to the west coast for refreshments of tea or coffee and a piece of Guernsey Gache, with a scenic drive around the coast to show you the witches stone and Les Trepieds Dolmen which Dawsey showed Juliet, before returning to the harbour. Before rejoining your ship your coach will stop opposite the memorial to the local people who lost their lives in the German bombing raid of 28 June 1940. This occurred one week after the last evacuation of the children to schools and families in the UK. The last evacuation ship had Eli, Elizabeth&rsquo;s grandson on board.

A quick minicoach transfer from the pier brings you to the cycling departure point, where you will receive your bike and a safety briefing. Properly equipped, follow your guide it&rsquo;s time to head out onto the open roads.&nbsp; Your route will take you along the West Coast road of Guernsey, including Catioroc, which is rich in tales of witches and fairies. You&rsquo;ll pedal your way past ancient burial chambers and through protected areas such as Shingle Banks and the Colin Best Nature Reserve. &nbsp;You&rsquo;ll also take in the splendid coastline at Rocquaine, and the charming working harbour of Portelet.&nbsp; You&rsquo;ll then head inland to work your way back through &lsquo;Ruette tranquilles&rsquo;. These tiny lanes are where horses and bicycles take priority over motor traffic and wind past meadows full of wild flowers and quaint cottages. Having relished the great outdoors and learned about the interesting history of Guernsey, reboard your minibus and return to St Peter Port and your awaiting ship.

Guernsey Coast Cycling Experience

Board your motor coach at the pier and enjoy a half-hour, scenic ride to the cliffs at Pleinmont Point. Here, you will visit the Batterie Dolman Gun Emplacement, a large field gun used by the German army. After this interesting half-hour stop, re-board your motor coach and travel to the west coast of the island. During this 15-minute ride, view fortifications from both the Napoleonic era and the German occupation. You will then arrive for a short stop at Fort Hommet Bunker, a military site that illustrates the German military&rsquo;s fortification of the island. Continue by motor coach to a local venue for a Guernsey cream tea. Then, spend the following hour at the fascinating La Vallette Underground Military Museum. Here, you will learn how war affected these now-idyllic islands, before returning to the port.

Looking out over the tranquil islands of the English Channel, you would never know they once played a pivotal role in World War II. The islands&rsquo; location off the coast of occupied France left them vulnerable to attack. Indeed, they were the only part of the United Kingdom to fall to German forces. On this excursion, views of fortresses, gun emplacements, La Vallette Underground Military Museum, and other military installments serve as reminders of a more turbulent time.

Time of War: The German Occupation in Guernsey

The turquoise waters surrounding Guernsey support a wide variety of marine and birdlife. Navigate across the channel to a reef of rocks just to the north of Herm Island, known locally as &ldquo;the Humps.&rdquo; This designated nature reserve supports a breeding colony of Atlantic grey seals. You may catch a glimpse of them relaxing on the rocks as you pass. A short but spectacularly fast trip takes you next to the Guliot Passage, which separates the islands of Sark and Brechou. Here, your RIB will nose into a vast cave under the cliffs before a smooth cruise to the southernmost tip of Sark. Here, your guide and local nature enthusiast will provide commentary about the impressive variety of seabirds that nest amid the rocky ledges. As your one-hour boat trip comes to a close, brace yourself as your captain treats you to an exhilarating thrill ride with a top speed of 38 mph back to your ship.

Meeting your guide at the pier, walk to the quay to board your boat for the 20-minute cruise to Herm Island. Ideal for guests who enjoy independent explorations, the easy-to-navigate island affords the opportunity to discover its charms on your own. Maps will be available to make your investigations free of worry and full of interesting sights. However, if a guided walk is more your speed, a local guide will be happy to accompany you on a one-hour introduction. Highlights of either your independent or guided stroll may include Shell Beach, where you will not be able to resist walking along the strand looking for shells. The seaside path continues to Belvoir Bay, a sandy lagoon perfect for relaxing on a warm day. Venturing up a somewhat steep woodland path that stretches to the crest of the island, you can visit the little church of St. Tugual, which dates to the 10th century. Descending the hill, lunch awaits you at The Mermaid Tea Garden before continuing to the mezzanine of little shops, which stock a variety of gifts and souvenirs. After your day of leisurely walks and inspiring views, re-board your boat from either the harbor or the Rosaire Steps, depending on the tide, for the return trip to Guernsey and your ship.
