Join this nine-night cruise in New York City and begin with a relaxing day at sea as we cross to the Bahamas. The Royal Naval Dockyard is our first port of call. Once a key strategic location for the British fleet, it’s now the historic setting for exciting entertainment venues and great restaurants. Two more days at sea transport us to St. John’s in Antigua, gateway to the beautifully preserved Nelson’s Dockyard. This extraordinary complex of buildings dates from the Georgian era and is where the English admiral sheltered his fleet. Today, it’s where yachties congregate as they pass through. We continue to Pointe-à-Pitre in Guadeloupe, learning about Creole life at the town’s museum. Francophone St. Barts is our next stop, to see and be seen in the glamorous boutiques of Gustavia. Our final port of call is San Juan, the lively capital of Puerto Rico.

Pointe-a-Pitre, French West Indies, French West Indies picture
It's well worth getting off the beach in Point a Pitre. While the vibrant, de facto capital beckons with its long ribbons of sand and sparkling turquoise waters, it is the fascinating blend of French and Caribbean influences, evident in its charming architecture, bustling markets, and vibrant festivals that take center stage here. Stroll along the waterfront, stopping off at the Marche Couvert, where you'll find everything from fresh papaya and golden strands of saffron to locally woven fabrics and hand-crafted ornaments. Stroll along palm-lined streets, savoring French-Caribbean fusion cuisine, and feel the rhythmic pulse of the local music scene. If you're interested in French architecture, you must stop at Rue de l'Eglise to admire the bright yellow Cathedrale de St-Pierre et St-Paul. Constructed in the 19th century, the Catholic church exhibits a blend of Gothic and Romanesque architectural styles, including twin towers and intricate detailing, making it a notable landmark in the city.

San Juan, Puerto Rico

oct 21, 2027

arrival 7:00 AM

San Juan, Puerto Rico picture
The capital of Puerto Rico is a proud place that makes a strong impression even on approach. Sail into harbor and spot the sights: El Morro, a 16th-century citadel which once defended the island from attack; Castillo San Cristobal, a fearsome fortress built to scare away invaders; and La Fortaleza, impressive home of the Governor. Once ashore, step back in time along cobblestone streets and through squares flanked by beautiful pastel-colored Spanish colonial buildings. Find a shady perch in one of the cafés, bars or restaurants to watch the world go by with a piña colada – invented here in the 1950s. There are good sands to relax on, too, such asIsla Verde Beach. Browsing the art galleries on Calle del Cristo, watching the street performers on Paseo de la Princesa, birdwatching in El Yunque, the only tropical forest in US territory.
