The cool Californian city of San Diego bookends this voyage along the coast of Mexico. We’ve a couple of days at sea to start our journey, so make the most of your sumptuous surroundings as we sail south across the Pacific. Once over the border in Mexico, our first stop is Topolobampo, where you can venture on the railroad to Copper Canyon or just relax on the beach. Then we make our way to Loreto, on the shores of the Sea of Cortez, where the 17th-century Our Lady of Loreto mission marks the start of El Camino Real, the historic road that links the Spanish missions all the way to Sonoma, California. We move on to the seaside town of La Paz. From here, take a boat trip to the desert islands in the UNESCO biosphere reserve, watching out for dolphins and sea lions as you go. Nature-lovers will be wowed by Isla Natividad, too, a haven for gulls, cormorants and shearwaters, where elephant seals bask on its beaches. It will provide you with just one of many stories to take home with you when we disembark at San Diego.

Topolobampo, Mexico

dec 24, 2026

5:00 AM - 11:59 PM

Topolobampo, Mexico picture
Separated from the Sea of Cortés by deep dunes, Topolobampo, on the Gulf of California in Mexico, has a history as rich as its marine life. Founded by American settlers in the 1800s as a Utopian society, the cobblestoned town's many tales are told well at the Museo de Topolobampo. For sea views, climb the Faro de Topolobampo, the town's 19th-century lighthouse. There are also boat trips to enjoy, paddleboarding in the clear harbor waters – look out for seals and dolphins – and birdwatching in the nearby wetlands. Rail fans can board the Chihuahua-Pacific Railroad, also known as El Chepe, which passes through the Copper Canyon in the Sierra Madre Occidental mountains.

Loreto, Mexico

Loreto, Mexico picture
Even the briefest of visits to this pretty town on the Sea of Cortez on Mexico's Baja California Peninsula will see you fall under its spell – it's a designated Puebla Magico (Magic Town) for good reason. Begin by exploring its cobbled streets and 17th-century buildings (Loreto was the first capital of the Californias during Spanish colonial rule), or follow hiking trails to the waterfalls and prehistoric cave paintings in the Sierra de la Giganta mountains that frame the town. Wherever you go, the sea is always calling – these spectacular cerulean waters are so rich in marine life, including whales, dolphins, turtles, and whale sharks, that Jacques Cousteau dubbed the area “the world's aquarium”. Take a boat trip to explore the islands just offshore, before returning to land to feast on zesty ceviche, piquant tacos, and the local specialty, chocolate clams.

07.

La Paz, Mexico

dec 27, 2026

8:00 AM - 6:00 PM

La Paz, Mexico picture
Cradled between the stark sands of Baja and the fertile waters of the Sea of Cortez, La Paz offers a host of challenging opportunities. Dubbed `the World's largest fish trap,` the area is home to over 800 species of fish and 2,000 species of invertebrates. Giant manta rays and whales navigate the depths while dolphins and sea lions frolic on the surface. Deep sea fishing, diving and sightseeing boats are available for charters.

Isla Natividad (Sightseen Only), Mexico

dec 29, 2026

7:00 AM - 1:00 PM

Isla Natividad (Sightseen Only), Mexico picture
Located about halfway down the peninsula of Baja California, Isla Natividad, or Nativity Island, is both remote and remarkable. The island is home to a small fishing community, mainly engaged in sustainable lobster fishing. The local inhabitants have worked to preserve the island's ecosystem and maintain their traditional fishing practices, creating a harmonious balance between human activity and the environment. Join local fishermen on their boats and learn about sustainable practices while enjoying the thrill of the catch. The island's natural beauty cannot be overlooked: dramatic landscapes include rugged cliffs, hidden coves, and stunning beaches, while the surrounding waters are teeming with marine life, making it a haven for divers, snorkelers, and marine enthusiasts. Find a mask, snorkel and some fins, and explore vibrant coral reefs, encounter diverse fish species. If you're very lucky, you might even spot some whales and dolphins in the offshore waters.
