Begin this eight-night holiday cruise from South to North America with an overnight stay in Cartagena. This lively Colombian city offers a variety of ways to get to know it better, from art exhibitions to cookery classes, and sunset cruises. Next, we spend a relaxing day at sea sailing across the Caribbean to the Dominican Republic. Two of the island's destinations are on our radar, Santo Domingo and Samana, with cycle rides around old colonial streets, the chance to find out about how chocolate is made, and a hike to a hidden waterfall. Our voyage continues in Grand Turk, with superb snorkeling amid coral gardens in turquoise waters, before we spend a day sailing to the beaches of Freeport in the Bahamas. Our final port of call is Fort Lauderdale.

Candy-colored houses and sugar-sand beaches give this sweet port town a fairytale appeal. One of the quieter spots on this island, the Samana Peninsula allows easy access to coves and bays straight out of a picture book. Playa Payita, known to the locals as The Little Lagoon, offers aquamarine water to dip into and the shade of bamboo and banana leaf umbrellas to retreat beneath. Playa Fronton, with its coconut palms and backdrop of black rock, is the perfect place to snorkel amid schools of parrotfish, nemos, and sunfish. But the big draw is the humpback whales that visit in winter – there's even a museum dedicated to the awesome creatures. Back on dry land, Los Haitises National Park, home to enchanting caves and ndangered birds, is a pretty place to hike, bike or kayak.Indulging in Samana's coconut-infused and zesty fresh seafood delicacies, taking a boat to the secluded beach at Playa Madama, spotting manatees amongst the mangroves in Los Haitises.

Few destinations are quite as seductive as the Bahamas – it's hard to resist those powder-soft beaches, turquoise waters of astonishing clarity and convivial vibe. Freeport on Grand Bahama is particularly beguiling, offering all the buzz of a city (it's the second largest in the country) with the laidback charms of island life. Feeling active? There's plenty to do in this marine playground. Kayak through mangroves, explore the vast network of limestone caves or snorkel through a vivid underwater world, where stingrays, turtles, and sharks glide through shipwrecks. If you're less keen on getting your feet wet, you can spend a pleasant few hours shopping for crafts and souvenirs at the many lively street markets, exploring the vibrant botanical gardens, or enjoying a tour of the Bahamian Brewery Company, makers of the famous Sands beer (a tasting is a must, of course). Before you leave Freeport, be sure to sink your toes into the sands of at least one of its many incredible beaches.
