Wonderful Copenhagen

The area around Roskilde was once walked by Viking warriors and traders. Travel to the Viking Ship Museum in this ancient town to see the thousand-year-old remains of the five Viking Longboats excavated from the bottom of Roskilde Fjord. Outside, you&rsquo;ll find the Museum Island, an archaeology workshop and, during the summer, a working Viking boatyard where master craftsmen make replicas of Viking-age wooden boats and Longboats, using the very same techniques as their Viking ancestors. A short drive will bring us to the mighty Roskilde Cathedral &ndash; a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Scandinavia&rsquo;s earliest brick Gothic cathedral. With tall spires, the magnificent church is one of Denmark&rsquo;s most important architectural monuments. Today&rsquo;s cathedral dates from the 12th century, but many of its architectural details, such as porches and side chapels, were added in subsequent centuries. Danish monarchs are buried in Roskilde Cathedral, with very few exceptions, all in ornate tombs. It is believed that Harald Bluetooth &ndash; a mighty Viking King &ndash; is buried here too. Keep an eye out for the richly decorated bronze statues, huge frescoes and paintings, and wooden choir stalls carved with reliefs and scenes from Creation to Last Judgment &ndash; all of these bears testament to the importance of this cathedral, overlooking Roskilde Fjord where the Vikings once sailed. After our exploration here, we will journey back to the pier in Copenhagen. &nbsp;

Roskilde Cathedral and Viking Ship Museum

Venture out on the Danish countryside and enjoy vistas of Sweden from the coastal road. In Hiller&oslash;d, explore the massive fairy-tale castle of Frederiksborg Castle, an astonishing example of Dutch Renaissance architecture. Built in the 17th century, Frederiksborg houses the Museum of National History. See historic portraits and paintings, and visit the chapel, home of the oldest working organ in the world, the 1610 Compenius Organ. The church is also the Order Chapel of the highest Danish order &ndash; here you can explore Coat of Arms of all receivers of this order, including Nelson Mandela and Charles de Gaulle. Enjoy a photo stop at the Queen&rsquo;s favored palace, the Fredensborg Palace. This is the Majesty&rsquo;s summer residence, built in baroque style. Often used to host state visits and larger family occasions in the Royal Family. Continue the tour to the local inn for a traditional Danish lunch. Next, pay a visit to one of Denmarks UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Kronborg Castle. Enjoy sweeping views across the Sound from the ramparts and learn of the castle&rsquo;s link to Shakespeare and Hamlet. Enjoy a guided visit to the Chapel, courtyard and imposing banquet hall before returning to your coach for a leisurely return drive to Copenhagen. &nbsp;

Enjoy three royal castles north of Copenhagen and indulge in a Danish lunch at a local inn be the seaside.

North Sealand Castles

The cultural and governmental capital of Denmark, Copenhagen, is also one of the most charming and fascinating cities in Northern Europe. It is believed to have been the site of human settlements dating back to the Stone Age, and the city itself is thought to have gotten its start as a fishing village in the 10th century. The magnificent Christiansborg Palace is the seat of the Danish parliament, home to the Royal Reception Rooms, houses the Supreme Court of Denmark and several governmental offices &ndash; the only place in the world with all three supreme powers of state under one roof. The palace itself sits on a small island in the heart of Copenhagen, Slotsholmen, and we will make the most of it is as we tour, what many Danes refers to as &ldquo;The Island of Power&rdquo;. We start off with a visit to the King`s Royal Reception Rooms. The Great Hall offers magnificent settings for state dinners hosted by the King, and in this very hall, take a glimpse of the tapestries telling more than 1,00 years of Danish and international history. As you walk through the palace, Kings and Queens from yesteryear are gazing down on you. No visit to Christiansborg Palace would be complete without seeing the throne room. On the balcony of this room, overlooking Copenhagen, Queen Margrethe II was proclaimed regent of the Danish Realm in 1972, followed by King Frederik X in January 2024. Christiansborg Palace is the third of the Christiansborg&rsquo;s to occupy this prominent location, and before that, it was the location of Copenhagen Castle. The remains of the two other Christiansborg&rsquo;s are still visible on the surface with the stables standing from the first and the Royal Chapel to be the reminder of the second. After touring the shining halls, we will go underground, to see the remains of the very first castle &ndash; or rather fortress &ndash; dating back more than 800 years. Experience the ruins from the castle of Bishop Absalon from 1167. Become acquainted with the story of the place as a medieval fortification, royal residence and seat of absolute power. Learn of the fascinating human fates that are entangled in the ruins. Crossing the court yard, we&rsquo;ll be making our way towards the Royal Stables. Here the horses of the Royal Household have been living since 1740. The stable complex and the two wing buildings are the remains of Christian VI&rsquo;s pompous Baroque palace. When His Majesty the King holds New Year levees and other banquets at Christiansborg Palace, the beautiful white horses are hitched to the Golden State Coach in splendid gala harness, getting ready to convey their regal passenger. The coach is from 1840 and coated with 24-carat gold leaf. Most of the royal coaches are on display at the stables today, however the horses are during the summer kept at a secret location. Walk to the Library Garden, crossing the courtyard of parliament. Here Danes often sees ministers and member of parliament as they enter or leave the palace &ndash; often on bike. Here we will dive a bit into the Danish democracy. The Library Garden is an oasis in the middle of the busy city. Now a charming garden, but it was once a part of the harbour, welcoming ships from the colonies. Today, we still see the hooks on the wall, where ships were moored. Our visit to the &ldquo;Island of Power&rdquo; will be seasoned with a visit to the mighty tower in the middle of the complex. 108 meters tall, this is the highest tower in the inner part of Copenhagen. Here we will indulge the Danish open faced-sandwiches lunch before making our way back to the pier.&nbsp;

Island of Power

Arendal is renowned for its vibrant city center and picturesque archipelago. The city's industrial heritage is mirrored in the Ganddal district's ancient burial mounds which indicate early human settlement, while archaeological discoveries in the area trace back to the Iron Age. Guests might like to take a trip on the 19th century Jærbanen railway, which passes through the city and is one of the oldest in Norway. Embracing sustainability, Sandnes melds outdoor recreation with cultural vibrancy. Scenic landscapes, including the iconic dunes and Gandsfjord, offer a backdrop for activities. The city also nurtures a flourishing arts scene, with galleries like Sandnes Kunstforening promoting local talent. A place of contrasts and balance, Kirkwall offers the high points of a large Scottish city – stellar local shopping and impressive historical sites like the St. Magnus Cathedral and ruins of the Bishop’s Palace and Earl’s Palace – as well as the charms of a small village. It is a relatively quiet ferry landing town that is also an excellent example of an ancient Norse settlement, making Kirkwall itself a living museum.

Tórshavn, named after the Norse god Thor and the most populous of the Faroe Islands, is one of the smallest capitals in the world. Here, classic grass turfed-roof houses and modern buildings stand side by side. This capital may be small in size but Tórshavn`s beauty lies in its abundance of mountains and valleys, culinary delights, impressive art scene and an unapologetic love for football---here, Soccer is king.

Scenic drive across the harbour across from historic Tinganes, the rocky peninsula in T&oacute;rshavn harbour where the ancient Vikings met. Travel up to the scenic, ridge-top road that runs along the southern part of Streymoy Island, pausing above T&oacute;rshavn for a photo stop at a viewpoint overlooking this colourful capital city.&nbsp; In the green, sheep pastures above T&oacute;rshavn, be on the lookout for stone cairns, which marked the footpaths between villages in olden times.&nbsp; Pause for another photo stop above Mjorkadal with views of Kaldbak and Kollafj&oslash;r&eth;ur fjords open below us.&nbsp; Further north we stop at viewpoint Kvivik and admire this beautiful traditional village before heading back to T&oacute;rshavn through a three-kilometre long tunnel and then along a fjord at sea level.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

It has its name from the five peaks, the islet is uninhabited.&nbsp; Sail along Tindh&oacute;lmur and Drangarnir, the two sea stacks between V&aacute;gar and the islet Tindh&oacute;lmur. The distinct names of Drangarnir are St&oacute;ri Drangur and L&iacute;tli Drangur, which can be translated into Large and Small sea stack.&nbsp; Sail up close to M&uacute;lafossur, which is one of the biggest tourist attraction on the Faroe Island, and to good reason, the view of G&aacute;sadalur and M&uacute;lafossur is spectacular: the waterfall that just falls off the island. On the top, you will admire the splendid scenery of the rock formation and a beautiful scenery of the island of V&aacute;gar.&nbsp; Pause by the small lakes before heading back down the mountain.&nbsp; After the walk, return to T&oacute;rshavn via the mountain road and stop at a viewpoint overlooking the capital.&nbsp; &nbsp;

You will also get a small taste of faroese dry meat and local rhubarb refreshment. After this visit you will get a chance to see what the whool is used for at Navia, a Faroese producer of woolen clothing, where modern designs are combined with age-old methods and traditions, lending each piece a unique character and the highest quality. The result is unique, both as comfortable clothing of high quality and as original leisure wear.&nbsp;&nbsp; Further north you will visit the village of G&oslash;ta and the Blasastova Museum, which will provide a unique insight into the culture and way of life in the Faroes in past centuries. While traveling with A&K Travel subsidiary companies:

A&K Travel processes Guest Personal Data when you interact with us offline. Other special category of personal data which we may end up receiving from you include details about your:
